Studied at Mayo School of Art, Lahore and J.J. School of Art, Bombay; Worked under Sequieros at Palacio Nationale de Bellas Arties, Mexico, 1952-54; Participated – ‘Contemporary Art’, National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, 1969; ‘India: Myth and Reality’, Museum of Modern Art, Oxford 1982; Represented at Venice, Tokyo and Sao Paulo Biennale; The order of the Crown from Belgium; National Award for Sculpture,1974; ‘Da Vinci’ Award for Lifetime Achievement, Mexico, 1989; Santiniketan’s highest award ‘Deshikottama’, 1989 and Honorary Doctorate, 2000; Padma Vibhushan, 1998; Kala Ratna by President of India, 2004; Works Exhibited at Kumar Gallery since 1958 and in shows – "Contemporary Art from India" at Villa Hugel, Essen West Germany, "Ten Contemporary Painters of India" - MIT Boston Mass.
